So we are doing Netflix

Posted in Uncategorized on January 29, 2008 by hollybirdy

And we got this movie the other day…my husband and I watched it over a couple nights time after the kids were tucked in bed.

Really great movie about working hard to change your life.  Really wonderful and is a great follow up to the prayer post I made the other day.    Based on a true story…makes you think and stretch a little.

Today…there are electricians at my house making some changes so my youngest and I are hanging out.  He is working hard in his playroom….errr…the boys have asked me to call it their “working room” instead of playroom so I need to change up my vocabulary.  Apparently when you are 6 and 4, playing is serious business!

A prayer…that really was something I needed to read

Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in
traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day
and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the
laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young
man who can’t make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college
student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of
not getting his student loans for next semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the
same spot every day (who really ought to get a job!) is a slave to
addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow
through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are
savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she
got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping

Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give
us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love
with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not to just those who are
close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judge and quick
to forgive, show patience, empathy and love.

Working for God on earth doesn’t pay much……but His retirement
plan is out of this world.

All that is italics came with the prayer, written by whom I do not know.  I don’t really think we work for our salvation…but the rest was a pretty good reminder.

And you know, His retirement plan really does pretty much ROCK!  Much better than any plan I could possibly dream up for myself!

My word for the New Year has been in my head since the beginning of the year but I have yet to write it down in words.  Which I am going to do here:

This year I plan to connect.  Connect with my God, my husband , my boys, old friends, new friends, siblings, grandmothers, parents, nieces/nephews…you get the idea.

Most of the time that means I just pick up the phone more but I also need to make an effort snail mail and email a little more.  Sending some love to people I love and care about.

I also am trying to make my time with my boys (all three of them) special.  Today, my youngest and I cuddled up under his new spiderman fleece blanket and just held each other for a little while.  For my youngest, cuddling is connecting.  He had a huge grin on his face.

I had to fight the urge to go do laundry…this or that.  And that is good…it is a good fight to win.  Quality time with a loved one or laundry…hmmmm…shouldn’t be a hard choice, right?

PS.  Picture was one taken years ago of me and my youngest…check out that chubby little hand…time flies.

A hike for me and the boys on MLK day

Posted in hike with tags , on January 22, 2008 by hollybirdy

I promised a hike for “mommy day” if the weather permitted on MLK day.  “Mommy Day” is what my boys call days that are not school days but not weekends either.  Special days off from school.

So we went.  We went to a local wildlife refuge.  I have had my eye on taking them on a 1.7 mile hike that goes right next to some lakes and a river.  Really beautiful but the mosquitoes and rattle snakes have kept us away til now.

The sign reads 1.7 miles.  We do a 1.4 mile walk here around our neighborhood every so often so I was pretty sure everyone would do fine.  I can tell you that it is more than 1.7 miles…probably more like 2 miles.  But there was little complaining….the last little bit when our van was not quite in sight and legs were getting tired there was a tad of grumbling.  But once the boys could see our van…all was good.

We saw tons of waterfowl.  It would be a beautiful hike in the early spring, with a lot more wildlife I am sure so we will have to try and do it again before those mosquitoes and rattlers are out in too large of numbers.

Header picture is also from the refuge.

One of my favorite places to go for parenting advice

Dr. Rosemond

You may see his article in your paper.  He not only cracks me up quite often but also gives me food for thought quite often.

Here and here are recent articles that I enjoyed.

Calendar project…

Posted in calendars, scrapbooking with tags , on January 17, 2008 by hollybirdy

So as I mentioned in another post, I have been working on SEI calendars for gifts (this is actually a picture of the 2008 one).  Yes…I do realize it is mid January.  I made 4 as gifts (my 2 grandmas finally got theirs today/yesterday, my mom’s is in the mail and I am nearly done with my mother in laws).  Since, my mother in law is local…hers went last.  Whew!  I make them nearly every year for these same people because they pretend not to be able to get by without them! 😉  And they wait so patiently for them! LOL

Basically 12 layouts each…so it is a lot of work and I appreciated the SEI calendar kit last year that I used which cut my work a bit because it was so well done.  However, I was NOT happy with the SEI kits this time around.  I think I will email SEI and let them know that I hunted their calendars out this year since I just loved, loved the 2007 one but was very disappointed with the 2008.

The rub-ons were actually faulty and I was afraid to use any of them after using a couple and playing with a couple others.  They included ribbon…which I used a little of but to be truthful on a calendar is a little silly IMHO to use a lot of ribbon..and you have to wonder if it is going to hold up, you know?  I did like the epoxy stickers but some of the brads they gave were HUGE and just too lumpy for a calendar.

Stepping up

Beth Moore-Stepping Up, A Journey through the Psalms of Assent

As I have mentioned earlier, I love Beth Moore bible studies.  And I am going to start this one next week.  I am also taking an on-line accounting class this semester so almost decided not do the bible study but I just can’t pass it up.    Gotta make time for God.

Anybody who is local is welcome to join me (like you Amy?) Tuesdays 7-9 pm.  They have childcare but my boys stay with their dad as they need to be sleeping by 7:30 or 8.
