I was totally and completely due for a haircut.  I had not had anything done since January!

Time flies…but my hair was in a state of NEED.  Much better.

Wonderful Wednesday, storing scrapbooking ideas

Posted in wonderful Wednesday -scrapbooking on May 28, 2008 by hollybirdy

I browse my scrapbooking magazines over and over…some of the ideas I just can’t part with.  I have organize and have them handy for inspiration.  I used to put them in page protectors and put them in a notebook…but I never used that system.  Not handy enough for me.

So I came up with the system.

I have this metal box from Oriental trading.  I use 4 X 6 index cards and use tabs to organize the ideas within.

Tabs are:  Favorites right now, accents, 1 photo pages, baby, birthday, black and white, I have that!, instant pages, journaling, multi photo simple sketches, machine stitching, personality, photo ideas, projects, school, stamps, paper peicings, cards and then a file idea for each of my boys.

I should have taken a picture of one of my idea cards that has a LO on it.  Sometimes I just rip the layout of interest out of the magazine (however…I have issues with that…it seems wasteful to rip up a magazine and I try to give my magazines another life by passing them on to friends/family).  So since I have issues (lots of them..this is just a little one), I either draw the sketch/idea on the card or copy the layout, staple the idea to my card and file it.

Here is an example of one that is in the “stamps” file.

This card helps me remember that I have those border stamps.

The stamp file is the way I remember what stamps I have…these are not all my stamps mind you but my border stamps and journaling stamps that are kinda general and can be used on many different layouts.  I just stapled an old extra photo on it for fun.

Wonderful Wednesday, Photo Freedom

Posted in wonderful Wednesday -scrapbooking on May 21, 2008 by hollybirdy

On National Scrapbooking Day, I won a copy of “Photo Freedom” by Stacy Julian.  I was able to read it cover to cover over the weekend…as we did a little traveling…and I was so inspired.

Photo Freedom

Lately I have been looking at my albums (I use these) and have been unsure how I was going to proceed with my current system.  I have an album for each of the boys that span certain ages…and when one gets full, I start another one for that kiddo.  Then I just date family albums according to year.  When I want to sit down and enjoy them…it is hard to choose which year, etc.  And I have started thinking…it will be even harder in 10 years when there will be sooo many years to choose from.  So basically that is where I was at before I got this book.  I want the scrapbooks to be enjoyed.  I certainly put enough time and money into them…and they need to easy to browse through.  My system was not allowing that…I needed a new plan.

Stacy’s system is wonderful in that she labels her albums according to the topic…or the story told (I am big on the story told on a page to begin with so it just makes so much sense to me)…not by date.  For instance, she has a “People we love” album…I have a ton of layouts that would be just perfect in that kind of album…and a “Places we go” album which is perfect for places you go as a family from vacation to church.  She has a great system for how to deal with pictures from the moment you take them to getting your favs in a scrapbook.  She is the mother of 5 and doctor’s wife (not to mention a big wig in the scrapbooking world)…busy woman…her system is made not to even overwhelm someone who has a very busy life.

Oh, and she is all about scrapping out of order…I mean totally out of order.  Like even storing your pictures out of order!!  (okay, okay…storing just a select few out of order for good reason…gotta read it!) 🙂  Seeing the FREEDOM portion here?  I am okay with scrapping out of order…I do it all the time…the reason I use 3 ring binders is because I gotta put it back IN order when I put it in an album (sooo there is a little lack of freedom in that, huh?)  This is where I found freedom for even myself…a few months off?  No big deal.   Combining some cool pics from different parts of the same year…great!   She has more than twice as many kids as I do…so she is even okay with putting teeth on a tooth fairy LO that don’t even belong to the kid she is telling the story about.  That made me chuckle…and get a little squimish…like…we are taking this freedom thing a bit far! LOL

So…basically…she recommends albums that are similiar to mine…but when it comes to storing my unscrapped photos…I have some work to do!  I can see how her ideas will really fix a lot of my problems…and I am excited because I can see how this system will help me make pages that tell the story that I really want to tell…when I want to tell it.

MOnday mission type of thing, ideas from Martha Stewart site

Quilt Headboard Love this quilt used as a headboard. Click here for more info.

Coordinating Mismatched Towels   Love this idea for taking a bunch of mismatched towels…adding some ribbon and then you have some matching towels.

Busy busy around here…last week of school!  So no missions getting accomplished but I came across these two ideas some time ago…and liked them a lot.

I am going to be spending some time by the pool

Posted in my life with tags on May 15, 2008 by hollybirdy

And some time IN the pool this summer.  We have a membership to a pool that is within walking distance from our house….so the boys and I are excited to spend some time there.

I just had to get a couple new suits.  I have bought exactly one suit since I had my 6 year old.  And that one suit was a Walmart one, that is so not flattering at all.  I think I have avoided it mostly because it is so painful to swimsuit shop…you agree, right?

So…I went on Lands End’s site…and measured and re-measured (uggghhh..not fun but better than trying on swimsuits myself!)..and got myself a virtual model to try on the suits for me.  The virtual model is free, all you have to do is click on “try on” when you are looking at a suit.  As far as local shopping is concerned, there are no good places to go buy a suit anyway…and if you are going to do something as scary (and downright depressing LOL) as try on a swimsuit…you might as well have a virtual model do it for you.  Besides, what else is technology good for?

It is funny….because Land’s end already had an account for me, it seems I had a virtual model already set up and never had the guts to order the suit!

So I ordered these tops: this one  and this one.  And a cute skirt bottom (this one) and then just a regular black bottom.    I got them in yesterday…very flattering…very happy with the whole experience…now that it is over! 🙂

By the way, they even have special recommendations for you “anxiety zones” as they call them on the site…tummy would be mine…something about giving birth to a couple hefty boys (9 and 10 pound bruisers) left me with issues…errr…”anxiety zones”.

Wonderful Wednesday, poems and quotes

Posted in wonderful Wednesday -scrapbooking with tags , on May 14, 2008 by hollybirdy

I for one love a fitting (and cute) quote or poem on a scrapbooking page.  I have a system for dealing with quotes…I have this little notebook:

IMG_0229.jpg picture by hollybirdy

It has the following tabs:  cousins, boys, graditude, love, friends, fall, Kids/children, fun, perspective, baby, brothers, life, motherhood, you!, grandparents, and family.

Some of my favorite “quotes” are scriptures and I have them scattered throughout in the various categories.

Favorites on perspective:

“To everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.”  Ecclesiastes 3:1

“What you see depends mainly on what you look for.”

“I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be.”

“To get the true value of joy, you must have someone to divide it with.” Mark Twain

My system for poems is to store them in a file on the computer…which is a bit flawed because I don’t think to look and see what there is very often.

I get a lot of my poems from my mom, who is a gifted writer.  She taught first grade for many years and used to write the cutest poems for her kids to use…I have used a few of those for my boy’s scrapbooking pages.  She will be sharing some poems on her blog from time to time.  Here is one she shared last week…about the month of April.
