I learn things everyday….

Posted in Uncategorized on April 10, 2010 by hollybirdy

My boys and I were talking the other day about learning new things.  My 6-year-old was pretty sure that even though his mom was old, that she still learned things everyday.

I agree, I soak up wisdom from lots of places, some of my favorites lately have been from my boys.  Some current examples follow:

1.  When you are a six and eight year old boys, climbing everything in sight can be thrilling yet dangerous.

2.  The worst part about Kindergarten are “the monkey bar blisters”.

3.  Sometimes when you are 8 and 6-year-old boys, it is a good idea to climb trees with the added security of your jump ropes.  There is only one catch.  When you have lost your footing and need the “jump rope security”, grab the rope that is actually tied down.

4.  When your “jump rope security fails” you (for whatever reason) while you are climbing a small tree, you will at the very least end up with scratches and a bruised hiney.  But that is only IF you have the luck of my 6-year-old.

5.  When you are 6 and your fall out of a small tree, your reaction looks a lot like someone started your bottom on fire (this information provided by my 8-year-old who had a front row seat).

6.  When you are six and 50 inches tall and you decide to scale a six-foot brick fence, it isn’t very scary til you get to the top.  On the top is when you aren’t sure you should have taken on this task.  However, you don’t call for you mom who is nearby, you just tell her about it later.

See what smart and wise little monkeys I have?

Enlightening.  I have learned that it did little good for me to outlaw the climbing of the largest tree in our yard since fences and small tree as just as tempting and dangerous.  So much to learn….even at my age…learning so much.

Life is just that way.

I love this quote.

The Lord works from the inside out. The world works from the outside in. The world would take people out of the slums. Christ takes the slums out of people, and then they take themselves out of the slums. The world would mold men by changing their environment. Christ changes men, who then change their environment. The world would shape human behavior, but Christ can change human nature.Ezra Taft Benson

So true.  God will not always lift you out of your circumstances but he will change you from the inside out.  Praise God for just that because only God could do that!

New every morning

Posted in faith, Uncategorized on December 19, 2009 by hollybirdy

One of my children has always had sleeping issues.  He has always been a really, really early riser.  It is imperative that as a general rule we get him to be early.  When he gets overly tired he has always come apart at the seams.  Poor kid.  It took my husband and I awhile to figure out the problem and how best to deal with it.

A few days ago, our son turned 8.  He deals a little better with sleep deprivation now days then he did when he was 2 (praises to the good Lord!).  However, now days when I have to put him to bed later or his overly tired from his day, we have learned that everything looks dismal to him.  He is down on himself, the world and life in general.  At first when I noticed this, I would try to sit with him, chatting and praying.  With experience we learned to just tuck him in and tell him that Jesus and his parents love him and that is all that matters.  That followed by an all out sprint out of the room!  What was always amazing to me was that all was well in morning.

At first, I thought of it as some sort of miracle.  Sleep and his parents fervent prayers to a God who hears us, had made it all better.  This past week, we had a couple late nights in a row (not terribly late but 8:30 or so) and I was reminded of a scripture as I telling him I loved him and sprinting for the hallway.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,
    his mercies never come to an end;
    they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.

Each morning, God is faithful.  My little sunbeam gets up with the sun and all is well.  He sometimes even laughs about the things he was worried over the night before.  There is hope yet again…a new day.

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”

Fun stuff I just found

Posted in scrapbooking, Uncategorized on May 18, 2009 by hollybirdy

Some of you may have found this before….but I didn’t know they had so much cool free stuff from these magazines.

Paper Crafts Magazine has a download section and they even keep some downloads from previous issues too.

They have quotes and sentiments cutely done up that you can download.  Like this:When you...

Very cool!  (and true but that is another blog post I am sure!)

When I first started scrapbooking, one of the things that drew me in was paper piecing.  Paper piecing is something I used to do a lot of.  I love to add dimension with inking and make cute paper creations.  I stopped doing that for a time but have been more drawn to it lately.  A current one that I am making work for a layout is here:

May/June 2009 Patterns & Downloads

You know…me and birds.

Scrapbooks, etc has a Piece talk section in every issue….this I knew.  I did not know that they have such a great online paper piecing area.

They have these birds and tree.

Above layout is off of Scrapbook, etc. site….showing off the paper piecing options.

My prayer/quiet time journal…

Posted in faith, kid sayings, Uncategorized on May 15, 2009 by hollybirdy

my journal and wes1_edited copy

My oldest….firstborn…is such a sweetie.  I take my prayer/quiet time journal to church and some mornings my boys draw and write in it.  I have always enjoyed their scribbles and this is one of those times.   It reminds me that this time with my boys is fleeting…my oldest would not spell love that way anymore.  He is growing up fast.

It reminds me that one of my main responsibilies is to teach my boys about God’s word.  To teach the truths that are there.  I added that scripture to the page the other day when I was having my quiet time.  The boys usually flip through the journal and write on pages toward the back of the journal so it had been quite some time since I had looked at the my firstborn’s scribbles and it just so happened that I had come across that scripture recently.

I love that scripture..there isn’t a lot of security or peace in our world anymore…only God can give true peace.

So remember…

Jesus luves you!

(very much!)

I wanted to share some things that I thought were cool at this time in my life.

I have sat down several times to do so…haven’t gotten it accomplished.

Let’s see…

Ali Edward’s new workspace tour…worth the look.  In typical fashion, Ali generously follows up the post with lots of specifics.

The Generous Wife – I have been receiving her daily generous wife emails for awhile now and have been blessed by them. My husband was the one to tip me off about these as he was getting the Generous Husband emails and thought they were pretty cool.

This Lazer Tag system

Lazer Tag 2-Player Battle System Game

I get beat every time…but that is beside the point.
